On August 7, 1782, General George Washington established the first award of the U.S. Military, the Continental Army. It was named The Badge of Military Merit. It was only awarded to three members of the Continental Army. The citation includes the line, "Let it be known that he who wears the military order of the purple heart has given of his blood in the defense of his homeland and shall forever be revered by his fellow countrymen." This meant that those who received the award were wounded in action with the enemy.
The award fell into disuse after the Revolution until after World War I, and then made retroactive to include wounds received during battle in WWI. At that time it was named the Purple Heart. Today it is awarded to those who receive wounds as a result of battle with the enemy.
Moms Love Quilts has a special place for these warriors. As it is said, "all gave some, some gave all." This award is the military recognition of this sacrifice. They have given of their blood and in many many cases, their lives in defense of this nation.
The Military Order of the Purple Heart is an organization for those who gave that gift of blood to us. Moms Love Quilts has had the privilege of presenting many of these warriors with quilts from our citizens in appreciation of their gift to us. They are a special group of men and women who deserve the honor they have earned.
NEVER FORGET!!!
